web site design - technical aspects

A site should be visually appealing and also technically clean.

Good clean, concise code contributes to faster execution (i.e. page loads), easier editing and happier search engine spiders. Search engines will actually penalize sites for poor code. The non-visuals are important too, very important.

HTML

Hypertext markup Language (HTML) is the most wide spread language used to display content on the Internet. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is the primary organization to standardize HTML. DSD Web Works strictly adheres to all W3C guidelines thus ensuring constancy for our client's sites.

Version presently incorporated by DSD Web Works: XHTML 1.0 Transitional

Navigation CSS

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) separate the structure of a document from the layout. CSS contain information that describes how documents are presented and allows for a more consistent presentation across many types of output devices. Again, the World Wide Web Consortium has set standards for CSS to which DSD Web works strictly adheres.

JavaScript

JavaScript is the premier client-side scripting language in use today. It is ideally suited for such tasks as validating form data, presenting slide shows, image swapping or in the creation of complex user interfaces. DSD Web Works utilizes the power of JavaScript in our clients sites.

PHP / MySQL

PHP is the premier server-side scripting language. It is ideally suited for more complex tasks the reside on the site's server such as shopping carts, forums, content management systems, user authentication, and data base manipulation.

MySQL is a very fast, vigorous, relational database management system. A database enable you to efficiently store, search, sort and retrieve data. Powerful features for a site that utilize MySQL would include robust shopping carts, web site forums, calendar and other data intensive scripts. Utilizing both PHP and MySQL, allows DSD Web Works to create sites with more creativity towards function and content for both the client and the viewer.
