tutorials - image manipulation

There are many photo editing software packages. One of the best, and the one DSD Web Works uses, is Adobe's Photoshop CSS. However it is not inexpensive and may of our clients require photo editing prior to uploading their images. Generally one just needs to crop, resize and optimize images for website usage and for these tasks we recommend Picasa. Picasa is a wonderful photo managing tool that also allows you to do minor editing and the best part... Google offers it as a free download.

First, download Picasa.

Once you open Picasa the first time it will ask to inventory your images... again the photo management aspects of Picasa are wonderful!

Now for the most common edits: crop, resize and optimize.

1. Open Picasa
2. Navigate to the folder of your choice
3. Double click on the image of your choice (this automatically opens the edit screen)

Picasa Crop

Cropping

Select the crop button and then move the cursor to a section on the image and hold the left mouse button down and then drag, release button when ready... you will see the 'section' highlighted.

You can drag this 'section' by simply clicking and dragging. You can also resize the 'section' by placing your cursor over the edge of your choice (then click and drag)... it is that simple!

When content... click Apply

Now onto Resize and Image Optimization...

Click on File (very top left) and select Export Picture to Folder...

Picasa Resize If you want to place the edited image in a different folder use the Browse button to select the folder or create a new one in the "Name of Exported Folder" box.

Resize

Now enter the width of your choice.
Resize to: 150 pixcels

Optimize

Image Quality: Custom (85)

Custom (85) is perfect for web presentation.

And that is it, you have now cropped the image, resized it to an appropriate size and optimized for web use... now start uploading those 'perfect' images!

Good luck!
