domain name registration

First and foremost to any Internet presence is that one needs a Domain Name, your www.ToTheWorld.com address.

Choosing the Name

The name you choose should be both descriptive of the content within your site and a name that is easily remembered by your viewers. A domain name is not case sensitive. Thus, www.ThisIsTheSame.com as www.thisisthesame.com. You may choose also to use a hyphen in the name. For instance, www.Brookshire-Estates.com might be better then www.BrookshireEstates.com.

Availability

Once you select a given name, check and make sure it is available. This is best done using the Whois Search at InterNIC. Not only will it inform you of availability, it will inform you of possible alternatives.

Registering

You may actually register your name with many deferent Registrars. A list can be found on the InterNIC site. We recommend using the registration service at our sister company Finger Lakes Web hosting

Words of Wisdom

Make sure that your name is indeed registered in you name. Unfortunately too many design companies register names for clients who only find out later that they do not actually own their domain name.
